Can I use my PlayStation 5 to watch DVDs?

vD3pRyK
I just got a new PS5 and I'm excited to play some of my old favorite games on it. However, I've also been thinking about watching some of my old DVD collection that I haven't gotten around to converting to digital yet. Is the PS5 capable of playing DVDs out of the box, or do I need to look into getting an additional accessory? I know it's not as common for consoles to include DVD playback anymore, but I'm curious about whether this is something I can use my PS5 for.

The diskless PlayStation 5 isn't designed to play DVDs or any physical media directly, but it does have a feature called Remote Play which allows you to stream content from your home PC over Wi-Fi using PCSense software for games and videos. For movies specifically stored on disc format like DVDs though, the console itself won’t read those out of box.

Honestly, DVDs aren't exactly the most common format anymore. They're slowly getting phased out by digital streaming services and the PlayStation 5 is more geared towards gaming and online content rather than physical media playback. However, you can consider upgrading your DVDs to a digital copy that you can store on an external hard drive or cloud storage service like Google Drive or Amazon Cloud. This way, you can still access your favorite movies and cartoons, but on the PlayStation 5 through its built-in media player app.

Yeah, you're right to be curious about DVD playback on your PS5, but here's the deal – it's not exactly built for that. However, what's often overlooked is that the console does support digital copies of movies and TV shows through its media player app. If you've got a collection of DVDs, consider ripping them into a digital format like MP4 or AVI and then transferring them to an external drive or cloud storage service. This way, you can access your favorite flicks directly on the PS5 without needing any extra gear.
