How do sleep patterns affect overall health?

I've been noticing that my productivity at work has decreased lately, and I'm feeling really sluggish during the day. My doctor told me that it might be related to my sleep patterns, but I have no idea how to improve them or if they're even affecting my health in a significant way. I do remember that I used to get a good 7-8 hours of sleep every night, but now I'm only averaging around 5-6 hours....
