What is the hottest planet in our solar system and why?

I was talking to my astronomy club friend and they told me that there is a really interesting debate about which planet in our solar system has the highest surface temperature. They mentioned something about Venus being the clear winner due to its thick atmosphere, but I'm not entirely sure why it's so hot there.
