What is a MIDI keyboard and how is it used in music production?

I’m really interested in music production but I have no idea where to start. I’ve been listening to electronic music for years and I want to be able to create my own tracks. A friend recommended that I get a MIDI keyboard, but I have no idea what it is or how it works. Can anyone explain to me the basics of MIDI keyboards and their use in music production? I’m looking forward to hearing about any tips or tricks you can share. I did some research beforehand but everything I found was confusing and didn’t seem to make sense. I’d love to hear from someone who has experience with MIDI keyboards and can guide me through the process of getting started. Thanks in advance for your help!

A MIDI keyboard is an electronic keyboard instrument that sends musical notes, pitches, and other control data to devices such as computers, synthesizers, or drum machines via Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) cables. It allows musicians to create and record music using virtual instruments, effects processors, and other software-based components. By connecting a MIDI keyboard to a computer, users can generate sounds, rhythms, and textures that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional acoustic instruments alone. In music production, MIDI keyboards are often used as a primary input device for recording melodies, harmonies, and basslines. They can also be used to control virtual drum machines, synthesizers, and effects processors to create complex soundscapes and arrangements. One of the key benefits of using a MIDI keyboard is its flexibility and expressiveness. Unlike traditional keyboards, which often have fixed velocities and limited range, MIDI keyboards allow users to experiment with different playing techniques, dynamics, and articulations. This enables musicians to create unique sounds and textures that add depth and emotion to their music. For beginners, starting with a MIDI keyboard can be an affordable and accessible way to begin creating music. Many software programs, such as GarageBand or Logic Pro, offer virtual instrument plugins that can be controlled using a MIDI keyboard, allowing users to start making music right away. By understanding how to use a MIDI keyboard effectively, producers and musicians can unlock new creative possibilities and take their music production skills to the next level.
